Yoni Oil vs. Yoni Butter: Which Is Right for You?
We make exactly two textures of intimate skin care, and people ask us to pick between them almost every day. The honest answer is that our yoni oil and our yoni butter share one philosophy — plant-based emollients, external use only, no medical promises — and differ in almost everything you can feel. One is a liquid that disappears into skin in minutes; the other is a whipped solid that melts on contact and lingers. Neither is "better". They are different tools, and choosing well depends on your skin, your routine, your climate and what you actually want the product to do. This guide lays out the differences plainly so you can decide in five minutes instead of guessing at checkout.
What yoni oil is
Our oil is a light, fast-absorbing liquid built on cold-pressed grapeseed oil, blended with jojoba and vitamin E. Grapeseed is one of the richest common carrier oils in linoleic acid — a fatty acid that is a structural component of the skin barrier itself, which is why linoleic-rich oils feel light rather than greasy on skin [1]. Grape seed oil also carries a package of tocopherols and phenolic compounds that has made it a subject of genuine cosmetic and nutritional research [2].
In practice: you dispense a few drops from a glass dropper, press them into external skin, and within a few minutes there is no visible residue — just softer skin. The unscented Original is the version we recommend for daily use and for sensitive skin; the infusions add steam-distilled essential oils at a low leave-on dilution for scent. Our step-by-step ritual guide covers technique and timing.
What yoni butter is
The butter is a different formula, not a thickened version of the oil. It is a whipped blend of virgin coconut oil and cocoa butter — solid at room temperature, with a soft, aerated texture that turns to liquid the moment it meets warm skin. Coconut oil is one of the few plant emollients with a randomized controlled trial behind it as a skin moisturizer: in a 2014 RCT, topical virgin coconut oil improved hydration and skin-barrier measures in dry, eczema-prone skin over eight weeks [3]. (To be precise about what that study shows: coconut oil moisturized skin in a medical study population. It does not make our butter a treatment for anything — a distinction we will keep repeating.)
In practice: you scoop a small amount, warm it between your fingers for a second or two, and massage it in. It absorbs more slowly than the oil and leaves a longer-lasting, cushioned, occlusive finish — which is exactly the point. This is the texture for unhurried massage, for very dry skin, and for anywhere you want the emollience to stay put.
Side by side
Here is the whole decision in one table.
| Yoni Oil | Yoni Butter | |
|---|---|---|
| Texture | Light liquid; dropper-dispensed | Whipped solid; melts on skin contact |
| Absorption speed | Fast — a few minutes, no visible residue | Slow — richer, longer-lasting surface layer |
| Best for | Daily moisture, post-shave comfort, quick routines | Massage, very dry skin, an evening ritual |
| Scent | Unscented Original, or four botanical infusions | Naturally faint coconut-cocoa; no added fragrance |
| Staining risk | Low when given a few minutes to absorb | Higher — allow time before dressing, or use at night |
| Travel & climate | Stable liquid in dark glass; consistent in any season | Softens or liquefies above ≈28 °C; firm in cool rooms |
| Price per use | A few drops per use — a 30 ml bottle lasts about three months of daily use | A fingertip scoop — 100 ml lasts one to two months |
| Size & price (CAD) | 30 ml $39 / 60 ml $59 (Original) | 100 ml $49 |
Choose the oil if…
- You want a daily habit, not an occasion. The oil is quick: drops, thirty seconds of pressing in, dressed and done.
- You dress soon after applying. Fast absorption means minimal transfer to underwear or clothing.
- Your skin is sensitive or reactive. The unscented Original has the shortest ingredient list we make, and grapeseed's light, linoleic-rich profile suits skin that dislikes heavy occlusives.
- You mainly want post-shave or anti-friction comfort along the bikini line, where a thin fast film is more practical than a rich one.
- You travel — a liquid in dark glass behaves the same in a Bali guesthouse and a Canadian winter.
Choose the butter if…
- Massage is the point. The slower slip and cushioned glide are what a whipped butter is for; a fast-absorbing oil disappears before a massage ends.
- Your skin runs very dry, especially in heated indoor air through winter, and you want emollience that is still there an hour later.
- You prefer an evening ritual — applied before bed, the slower absorption is a feature, not a nuisance.
- You like a naturally rich texture and the faint scent of coconut and cocoa without any added fragrance.
Or simply take both
Many people end up with the pairing: the oil as the everyday workhorse, the butter for slower evenings and massage. That is exactly what the Complete Set is — the Original Yoni Oil plus the Yoni Butter together for $78 CAD, about ten dollars less than buying them separately. It is also the sensible way to find your own preference: use both for a month and your skin will tell you which one it reaches for.
What neither of them is
A comparison article is a strange place for fine print, but we would rather lose a sale than blur this. Both products are cosmetics for external skin — the vulva, the bikini line, the surrounding body. Neither treats, cures or prevents anything; neither balances vaginal pH; neither belongs inside the vagina, which maintains itself without our help. If skin is itching, burning, producing unusual discharge or odor, that is a question for a clinician, not for either of these jars — and applying cosmetics over symptoms can delay real care.
One more shared caution: both formulas degrade latex. Oil-based products — mineral or plant — weaken latex condoms; in laboratory testing, oil exposure caused rapid, dramatic loss of condom strength [4]. Do not combine the oil or the butter with latex or polyisoprene barriers. If barrier protection matters that day, skip both products or ask your clinician about oil-compatible alternatives.
The bottom line
Same philosophy, two textures. The oil is fast, light and daily; the butter is rich, slow and ritual. Pick by routine — quick mornings point to the dropper, unhurried evenings to the jar — or let the Complete Set settle the question for you. And whichever texture you choose, use it for what it honestly is: a well-made moisturizer for external skin, and a few deliberate minutes that belong only to you.
